Labs and X-Ray Information As part of your examination, the doctor may order x-rays or laboratory tests. You will be billed separately for these services by either the laboratory, Boyce and Bynum or the hospital where the tests are performed.
Preps for an IVP, one of our most common x-rays, is below.

IVP (intravenous pyelogram) Preps
Please notify us immediately if:
- YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IODINE OR SEAFOOD AND/OR
- YOU TAKE GLUCOPHAGE or GLUCOVANCE (a medication to treat diabetes)
An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is an x-ray exam of your urinary tract (kidneys, ureters and bladder). This test can help find stones or other problems with your urinary tract. The test takes approximately one hour.

Drink 8oz clear liquids every hour the day before your procedure. There are no food restrictions until the evening -- see #3.

Drink one bottle magnesium citrate at 4pm the day before your procedure.

Clear liquid supper evening before procedure. (broth, clear juice, tea, jello -- nothing red in color)

Four 5mg Dulcolax tablets at bedtime, then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

One Dulcolax suppository at home the morning of the procedure.
DO NO EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING THE MORNING OF PROCEDURE.
During the test you will be given an intravenous (IV) injection of contrast. Contrast is a substance that will enhance the x-ray images. It may make you feel warm or give you a strange taste in your mouth. This will pass soon.
For your safety, please inform the hospital personnel of the following:
- any known allergies
- previous kidney or bladder problems
- diabetes medication you take
- any previous surgery(s)
- if you are or think you may be pregnant
