Once a urinary tract infection has been diagnosed, your healthcare provider will prescribe a course of antibiotics for a particular number of days. The course of antibiotics should be completed. They should not be stopped just because the child appears better. It is also important to make sure that the fluid intake is at least 1 to 2 pints a day and that the child regularly passes urine.
As a parent, you can help reduce the chances of further infection by encouraging your child to follow the guidelines mentioned below.
Encourage regular bladder emptying every 4 hours or before each meal and before going to bed.
Try to avoid the wearing of tight trousers especially tight jeans.
Change underwear regularly.
Use cotton underwear in preference to non-breathing fabrics like nylon.
Wipe bottom clean from the front to the back.
Use soft absorbent toilet paper.
Treat constipation quickly and adequately.
Bathe regularly and dry carefully afterwards.
Take showers rather than baths if possible.
Avoid highly scented soaps, do not use bubble bath or wash hair in the bath.
