Not Your Grandmother’s Pessary
Web published 10/1/2003

A pessary is a device used for vaginal support. The pessary has evolved over centuries to become a safe medical device used to relieve the symptoms of a cystocele, rectocele, a uterine or bladder prolapse or the problems associated with urinary incontinence. A pessary provides support for the fallen organs (prolapse) or alleviates urinary incontinence by repositioning the problem area back to its normal position. Some pessaries fit similar to a vaginal diaphragm.

Pessaries come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Your healthcare provider will fit the pessary to improve your specific symptom as well as fit comfortably in the vagina. A properly fitting pessary should not cause pain or discomfort. Pessaries can be removed and inserted without difficulty by the patient. Cleaning the pessary is easy — just soap and water.

Historically, pessaries were made from a variety of materials, such as brass, wool, cork, gold or silver. Today, pessaries are made of state-of-the-art medical grade silicone.

Pessaries can be used for an indefinite period of time to improve symptoms or as an alternative to surgery. Pessaries can also be used on a temporary basis until corrective surgery can be performed. Sometimes pessaries are only needed for strenuous exercises like jogging or hiking or when a woman is going to be on her feet for a long period of time.

There has been a rise in popularity of pessary use in the past few years because they provide an effective safe option for women. As one woman describes her pessary “Everything old is new again”.

Associated Urologists maintains a pessary inventory which includes a variety of shapes and sizes. Maureen Brown, RN, CS, MSN, FNP has over 20 years experience in Women’s Health and has been excited with the renewed interest in a very viable option.
