Interstitial Cystitis
Web published 10/1/2003

The pelvic floor muscles perform an important role in the support of the pelvic organs. With interstitial cystitis (IC), however, there is abnormal tension in these muscles which contribute to increased pain and discomfort. This has been referred to as high tone pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

Physical therapy and pelvic floor therapy can play an important role in helping to reduce this muscle tension and decrease pain and discomfort. Physical therapy and pelvic floor therapy are in addition to regular pharmacological treatments for IC. The physical therapist can prescribe various exercises designed to improve realignment of the sacrum and ilium, therapeutic massage and muscle strengthening techniques. Treatment includes weekly pelvic floor therapy and functional electrical stimulation.

A home exercise program is encouraged for maintenance of the normal pelvic floor functioning. Talk with your healthcare provider about beginning a pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation program. Associated Urologists is proud to offer pelvic floor therapy within the comforts of our office for IC, urge, stress or fecal incontinence and pelvic pain.
