Today, people are more willing to talk about urinary incontinence, but not fecal incontinence. Fecal incontinence is the inability to control the elimination of stool and, like urinary incontinence, can be a socially devastating disorder for many people. Less than 50% of individuals with fecal incontinence report the symptoms to their healthcare provider.
This silence may be hurting many individuals and delaying treatment. Many new non-surgical treatments are available today, such as medication, dietary changes, exercise and biofeedback. Biofeedback is teaching the individual to identify and strengthen pelvic muscles which surround the bladder, rectum and/or vagina. Biofeedback treatment is available at Associated Urologists. If you are experiencing fecal incontinence, be sure to talk with your healthcare provider.
