Herbs and Surgery Do Not Mix
Web published 4/1/2004

New evidence shows some herbs could cause post surgical complications, such as excessive bleeding, irregular heartbeat, increased metabolism of some drugs, and increased potency of some anesthetic sedatives. "We are not trying to scare people away from taking herbs“ says Dr. Jonathan Moss, professor of anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Chicago. "By and large, they're quite safe. But before surgery, it's crucial that your doctor know what you are taking."

Researchers have focused on the most commonly used herbs in the United States and examined the medical literature for documented cases of post surgical complications. The conclusion—it's best to stop before surgery. At Associated Urologists, our advise is to stop all herbal medication 5 days prior to surgery.
