Prostatitis-About 50% of men in the United States will be treated for prostatitis during their lifetime.
Web published 1/1/2002

Prostatitis is an inflammation or infection of the prostate gland. It is a very common disorder. Prostatitis does not cause cancer of the prostate or damage to the kidneys.

The most common causes of acute prostatitis include infections by bacteria or other organisms and is usually treated with antibiotics.

Prostatitis which does not respond to standard therapy is called chronic prostatitis. Reasons for chronic prostatitis include infection, inflammation, and neuromuscular dysfunction.

Our Chronic Prostatitis Clinic is staffed by Joseph E. Montie, M.D. and John Markovitz, RN, CS, MSN, FNP. In our chronic prostatitis clinic a thorough evaluation for other causes of pain is made. John has studied with Dr. Daniel Shoskes, an expert in the evaluation and treatment of chronic prostatitis.

Symptoms of prostatitis may range from generalized, chronic pain in the penis, testicles, scrotum, lower back, stomach or perineum (the area between the scrotum and the anus), to fever, chills, frequent or painful urination, blood in the urine or painful ejaculation. Symptoms may develop slowly or suddenly and they may be continual or recurrent.
