Bed-wetting is a common event in young children. It is normal for a child up to 6 years of age to wet the bed once in a while. As children get older, they can control night urination better.
Do not become angry if your child can not stay dry during the night. Never punish or tease your child for bed-wetting. It will only make things worse. Support and patience are the keys in helping your child. The best cure for bedwetting is time. Most children outgrow it. Here are some tips to help your child stay dry throughout the night.
Limit fluids after the evening meal. Avoid caffeinated beverages and chocolate as these stimulate urination.
Encourage your child to use the bathroom during the night. Set an alarm clock (usually 3-4 hours after the child goes to bed) to wake the child up to urinate during the night.
Use positive reinforcement to increase the child’s self confidence. Put a calendar or chart up and give your child a sticker or star for nights that the child remains dry.
Talk to your child’s health-care provider if your child has daytime “accidents” or is still having wet nights after age 6.
